State of the art learning centre with robotics facilities coming to Victoria Point State High School

A rapidly growing bayside school is about to start construction on a multimillion-dollar learning centre enabling students to learn robotics. SEE THE PLANS

A bayside school will receive a $10 million-plus learning centre boasting facilities for teaching robotics and hospitality.

The Queensland Department of Education confirmed the State Government will invest $10.3 million at Victoria Point State High School to deliver a new two-storey learning centre.

With a current capacity of 1733 students the school, at 93 Benfer Rd, has seen student numbers steadily increase from 1191 students in 2018 to 1259 this year.

“The new building will include four general learning areas, two robotics rooms, a hospitality kitchen, staff workroom, amenities, lift and an undercroft future-proofed for four general learning areas when required,” a Department of Education spokesperson said.

“Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2022 and forecast for completion in late 2022.

“The Queensland Government is committed to providing functional, fit-for-purpose and well-maintained school facilities across the state that align with modern curriculum learning outcomes.”

The news was welcomed by VPSHS P&C secretary Tim Skewes.

“This sounds like a great addition for the school,” Mr Skewes said.

“It’s great to see the school get more facilities for this growing area.

“VPSHS has really grown in the last decade or so, not only in size but also in its achievements and reputation.

“It’s a credit to the school leadership and teachers. There is so much more that can be done, especially with sports facilities.

“Of course there will be a limit, and hopefully this is being planned for.”

Mr Skewes hoped the learning centre – which is forecast to create 28 local jobs during construction – would have the added benefit of use by the community.

“Most of us see the advantages of providing facilities that the whole community can get benefit from,” he said.

“So facilities that can host community members would be great.”

Member for Redlands Kim Richards said the investment comes after the recent completion of a series of facilities.

“This new $10 million learning precinct will provide a fantastic new facility for our students at VPSHS,” she said.

“This builds on our recently completed hall expansion, refurbished resources centre and airconditioned classrooms.

“Our Palaszczuk Government is committed to investing in our Redlands schools.

“I’m proud to be delivering the best possible learning environments for our students across the region.”
