A Brisbane man accused of being “caught up in sophisticated drug trafficking” has been refused bail after his parents offered $500,000 of insurance he will attend his next court date.

Sameer Aftaab Ali, 22 from MacKenzie, is charged with trafficking drugs from February to November of this year, after police seized $400,000 cash and 20kg of cocaine from his property.

He is charged with: possessing anything used in the commission of crime defined in part 2; trafficking in dangerous drugs; offence to buy or possess s4 or s8 medicines or hazardous poisons; possess tainted property; possessing anything for use in the commission of crime defined in part 2; three counts of possessing dangerous drugs; possessing dangerous drugs schedule 1, drug quantity of or exceeding schedule 3 but less than schedule 4; possessing dangerous drugs schedule 1 drug quantity of or exceeding schedule 4; and receiving or possessing property obtained from trafficking or supplying.

He is yet to enter a plea to the charges.

Mr Ali’s lawyer said Mr Ali would not be returning to his previous address and his parents said he would go back to his “teenage” days where they would keep him supervised.

“He will be under their lock and key and will surrender his passport so there is no chance of him fleeing, if that is a concern,” a lawyer said.

“His parents have offered the court half of one million dollars bond that he will appear at his next hearing.

“He has no contact with his family overseas and has no access to any money because the police took everything,” he said.

Prosecution said all mobile phones of those charged with the drug trafficking had been seized.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said Mr Ali could face “years and years” of prison time, if found guilty.

“Despite your parents putting up a $500,000 assurance, you do have access to a significant risk of interfering with witnesses,” Ms Vasta said.

“There is an unacceptable risk of you failing to appear with this high level drug trafficking,” she said.

Mr Ali will remain in custody until his next court hearing on February 1, 2024.
