A young Bayside tradie risked his squeaky clean criminal record by driving nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit and crashing into a vehicle, hours before a reading was taken for testing.
Riley Charles Lilwall, 20, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol on December 9, 2023 at Sallow Street, Alexandra Hills.
The court heard Lilwall, who had no criminal history, crashed into a stationary vehicle around 1am.
A Police Prosecutor said Lilwall identified himself as the driver when police attended the scene, one hour after the crash.
“He was hospitalised with a blood alcohol limit of 0.158,” a sergeant said.
“When asked if he had consumed any liquor he told police ‘a fair bit’ and the vehicle involved had been moved by someone else after the crash,” she said.
The court was told Queensland Ambulance and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene.
A lawyer said Lilwall is a panel beater who requires his drivers licence for his work and is deeply remorseful.
His lawyer submitted two character references to the court from his employers in support of Lilwall’s good character.
“He has engaged in the traffic offenders program and is happy to complete community service,” she said.
Magistrate Deborah Vasta said as a panel beater Lilwall should be aware of the dangers of driving under the influence.
“I’m sure your employment will be impacted by losing your licence,” Ms Vasta said.
Lilwall was sentenced to complete 40 hours of community service and was disqualified from driving for six months.
No convictions were recorded.
