A young Redland entrepreneur has opened the business he has been dreaming of since he was a teenager, putting his unique spin on the traditional barber shop.
Edward Cusack, 24, took up the scissors at Ted’s Tapers this week and said he had been booked out since day one.
“I have been wanting to have my own shop and put my own spin on things since I started my apprenticeship nearly 10 years ago,” Mr Cusack said.
“My mum has had a hairdressing business for 37 years and she is the reason I wanted to get into doing hair.
“Hairdressing was always around me growing up so the whole process has been quite organic,” he said.
Mr Cusack took out a lease at 131 Broadwater St in November and has been renovating the space since then.
“I’ve put the classic black and white chequered floors in but have added contemporary art and local tattoo artist’s designs to make the place feel more me,” Mr Cusack said.
“There is exposed brick on the wall to give the vintage feel.
“I want it to become a safe place where customers can feel safe, hang out and have a yarn.’’
Mr Cusack said his favourite style to cut is the classic 1940s slick back style.
“I love the slick look but can work with any hair style, type anyone wants. I can do it all,” he said.
“The biggest challenge or fear has been making sure I do it right and make the place professional but feel comfortable.’’
He thanked previous clients, friends and family for supporting his dream.
“All of the plumbing, electricals and design was done by local companies to keep everything in the Redlands and I’m so happy,” Mr Cusack said.
“The response has been great and I can’t wait to meet more customers and become a Redlands staple.’’
Ted’s Tapers is open on Mondays , Tuesday and Fridays from 8am–6pm, Thursdays from 8am–8pm and Saturdays from 8am–1pm.
