Police have appealed for the public’s help after a 12-year-old primary school student was rushed to hospital in a serious condition with head and chest injuries following an incident involving a car on a busy Redlands road.

Police said initial information indicated that shortly before 3pm a white transit van struck the boy, who was on foot, at the intersection of Moreton Bay and Redland Bay roads.

The Alexandra Hills boy sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

The driver of the van, a 54-year-old woman, was not injured and was helping police with inquiries.

Police appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV from the nearby area to come forward.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the boy was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital about 3.30pm on Wednesday, March 6.

A Bayside woman posted that her husband saw the child “flying in the air’’.

“He couldn’t stop, but saw everyone else running to assist and called the ambulance,’’ she said.

Police said the southbound road was closed and diversions were in place.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect long delays.
