Redland Bay cake maker Simone Weatherstone’s success started when she baked her own wedding cake.
The compliments she received helped her make up her mind to pack up her boutique bakery in Brisbane and make cakes for a living.
Mrs Weatherstone was voted the best cake maker and decorator in Redland and received nearly a third of the votes in the local competition.
Her home-based business has taken off since she was granted a food licence from Redland City Council.
Now her beautifully decorated cakes are selling … like hot cakes.
“I had a shop on Coronation Dr in Brisbane but then when I got married I made my own cake and guests at my wedding said it was the best they had ever tasted,” Mrs Weatherstone said.
“That’s when I thought maybe I could make a few cakes a week from home and I never really expected it to be a full-time profitable business.
“It really has gone from something little to something big.”
Each week, her business, Cakes by Simone, makes up to 12 speciality wedding, birthday and special occasion cakes.
Cakes by Simone topped the list of 15 cake makers from Redland.

Custom Cakes BNE, also based in Redland Bay and specialising in same-day delivery of cupcakes, came in second.
Owner and baker Allison De Keranflec’h set up her venture as a part-time business in 2022 but decided to take it to another level this year with her husband Sebastien coming on board as director.
The pair now produce up to 20 cakes and hundreds of cupcakes a week.
“I’m shocked,” she said. “I love what I do and I am grateful for everyone who voted for us and I hope I can continue to bake into the future for everyone.”
Mrs De Keranflec’h tied in second place with Lauren Smeelie and her business the CupCake Effect.
The CupCake Effect is based at Victoria Point and Mrs Smeelie also has a food licence to work from home.
Her fun creations include beautifully iced pink cupcakes with Iced VoVos on top.
Bayside.Bakes, also based at Victoria Point and owned and managed by Shannon Tollis, came in third with 12 per cent of the votes.
The gourmet cakes are custom made along with melt-in-your-mouth cookies and biscuits.
Fourth place went to joint winners Cuppa Make Cake and Fetch My Cake, who both got 7 per cent of the votes.
