Installation of security cameras at Weinam Creek carpark began this week following rising local frustrations about escalating crime in the area.

In August the News reported fed up residents had taken to installing security cameras on their own vehicles after cars were repeatedly dinged, smashed with rocks and tyres slashed.

Redland Bay’s Weinam Creek carpark is the regional gateway for residents commuting to the mainland from the southern Moreton Bay islands of Macleay, Lamb, Karragarra and Russell.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the marina precinct was used by hundreds of residents every day and the cameras would be a “welcome addition to the carparking area”.

“We have seen a number of concerning cases of vandalism at Weinam Creek in recent months, which prompted me to speak with local police and TransLink to see how we can work together to make the area safer.

“The result is an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Council, TransLink and Queensland Police.”

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards said the cameras would “send a clear message to anyone thinking of doing the wrong thing”

“It’s about putting criminals on the back foot and sending a message that anyone damaging property or carrying out anti-social behaviour will be caught.”

Council received a $49,920 grant from the Australian Government’s Safer Communities Fund toward the project.

State Member for Redlands Kim Richards said the vision captured by the cameras would be shared with Queensland Police to assist with police investigations.

Federal MP for Bowman Andrew Laming said the cameras would make the marina precinct safe for everyone using it.
