A Bayside mother has shared the extraordinary experience on her commute to work on Tuesday afternoon when a brave little chicken jumped from a truck in Mount Cotton.

Michelle Willis, a disability worker, was driving along Mt Cotton Road at 3pm while using hands-free mode to talk to her daughter on the phone when she noticed the chicken’s risky bid for life, diving from what was believed to be a slaughterhouse truck and landing on the road.

Her daughter, Jas Michelle, said the chicken smelt terrible but said it decided it was “not dying today”.

“If anyone saw the brave chicken who dived off the Grim Reaper Truck my mother rescued it,” Ms Michelle said.

Mrs Willis named the chicken Bertha in tribute to her being reborn after the brave jump.

Ms Michelle said she hoped the community could rest easy knowing Bertha would not end up on anyone’s plate.

“Even though I’m not above a delicious parma myself,” Ms Michelle said.

“(A) round of applause to my hilariously bleeding heart mother who will almost definitely be late to her next work shift due to being a hero.

“And a moment of silence to her car seats because good luck getting the stench of ‘terrified chook’ out of them,” she said.

Ms Michelle said her mother is seeking a forever home for her “clever, smelly friend” Bertha.

Ironically, shortly after Mrs Willis took Bertha on a trip to KFC to pick up her client.

“I cannot get over the irony that the meetup spot is at KFC,” she said.

Members of the Mount Community are in divide over the woman’s choice to save Bertha.

One resident said the woman’s actions have slowed her death down.

“She’s a meat chook, they aren’t meant to live past 24 weeks,” he said.

Another resident said this story has made her really happy.

“I might have to give up schnittys,” she said.

“I love this, I stopped eating chicken for 10 years because of those trucks,” said another resident.

“However long she’s got, bless your mums cotton socks, she can at least have some comfort for her time left.

“I’m amazed chooky survived the landing, but glad she did,” she said.
