Mt Cotton fun and fitness event to help cancer research

Thornland’s resident Michelle Edgeley knows all to well how cancer rips families apart. On May 19 she is hosting a fun-filled community event to raise money for research to find a cure.

When Michelle Edgeley’s father was just 47 he was diagnosed with cancer.

Tragically, within three months he had passed away.

Every year since his death nine years ago, the Thornlands’ resident has raised money for the Cancer Council Queensland joining in the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea but this year she decided to do a “bit of a different twist” on the usual event.

Ms Edgeley is hosting a “Fitness and Fun for Charity” event on May 19 at the Mt Cotton Community Park, Mt Cotton.

“I am not a doctor but I truly believe in living the best version of your life and giving yourself every opportunity to live a long life and I believe a healthy lifestyle and having a healthy mind is one way of doing this,” Ms Edgeley said.

“I didn’t get any support really from the Cancer Council as my Dad was diagnosed and 3 months later he died but I do know about the support they offer to families throughout Queensland and I want them to be able to continue their support and research and hopefully find a cure for cancer.”

Ms Edgeley said she was looking forward to getting the local community together “to have some fun and raise some money for the cause. Every cent helps”.

Volunteers are also needed to help at the event and with less than two weeks before the activities get underway, Ms Edgeley is hoping to find “some generous people who are prepared to volunteer an hour of their time for a great cause”.

She is seeking the volunteers for the first aid tent (must have first aid certificate) set up/pack down logistics staff, Big BBQ volunteers- cooking/serving, Fresh Food stall volunteers- serving, Raffle ticket stall volunteers and Donation bucket volunteers.

The shifts for each volunteer role would be an hour each.
