Police have executed a massive drug and crime bust on a southern Moreton Bay island, charging nearly 30 people with 70 offences.
Officers from the Bayside Tactical Crime Squad charged 29 people with 70 charges after a 10-day operation on Macleay Island from late October to early November.
The operation targeted both crime and traffic offences, while providing a strong policing presence on the island.
Three search warrants were conducted, four alleged drug drivers were detected and charged and one alleged drink driver was charged.
About 11.30pm on October 19, police saw two men loitering in a car park along Brighton Rd and searched them.
Officers allegedly located a knife, bolt cutters, sledge hammer, a screw driver and cannabis.
A 19-year-old Macleay Island man was charged with two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, one count each of possess knife in a public place, obstruct police officer, possess utensils and possess property suspected of been acquired for committing house break-ins.
He was expected to reappear at Cleveland Magistrates Court on December 21.
A 28-year-old Cleveland man has been issued with a notice to appear on one count each of possessing things intended for use in connection with offence, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing utensils or pipes and possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with a drug offence.
He was expected to appear at Cleveland Magistrates Court on November 21.
During a search at Alexander St on October 24, police allegedly found cannabis, drug utensils and drug equipment.
A 51-year-old woman was charged with three counts of supplying dangerous drugs and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs, producing dangerous drugs, possessing utensils and two counts of possessing things.
She was expected to appear at Cleveland Magistrates Court on December 12.
About 5.15pm on October 22, police stopped a van on a ferry after a report that the driver was drunk.
A 56-year-old Nerang man returned a positive result and was transported to Macleay Island Station for a secondary test.
He allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.226.
He has been issued a notice to appear on one count of drink driving and was expected to appear at Cleveland Magistrates Court on November 20.
Acting Inspector Mick Morier from Bayside Patrol Group said it was a significant amount of charges for the Macleay Island community.
“This operation demonstrates the dynamic capabilities of the Bayside Tactical Crime Squad, in that we can move around to respond to crime wherever it is detected,” he said.
“There may be a few Macleay Island locals who assume they’re able to get away with drug possession and other crimes here because they’re somewhat secluded.
“This is not the case, but we could not have achieved these results without information supplied to CrimeStoppers by local residents.
“Our officers can just as easily hop on a ferry and conduct this sort of targeted action at any time, and the community should expect that from us.”
