Appearing at the Cleveland Magistrates Court today Christopher William Graham Fish, 51, pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor.
The court heard Macleay Island man Fish works as a cleaner and cellarman at the Macleay Island Golf Club and had been intercepted by police near his home at 4pm on June 6 on Brighton St when he returned an “extremely high reading”.
Tests would confirm the defendant had a blood-alcohol level of 0.208 per cent.
Fish, who has since restarted work at the club, said the pandemic’s effects had led him astray at the time.
“I have changed my ways; it (drink driving) is not something I would normally do,” he said.
“It was just a matter of being locked up during COVID and not working.
“Everything got turned upside down and being locked up for weeks on end.
“I was cooped up with a friend at home all day long and I just needed to get away from his face.”
The court was told Fish had also been convicted of drink driving in 2017.
The defendant was convicted and fined $1,500 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
