A bayside man has been granted bail despite fears from police for the community and his ex-partner.

The Sheldon man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Cleveland Magistrates Court on Thursday, December 1, via a video link from jail, on one count of contravention of a Domestic Violence Order (DVO), one count of breaching bail conditions, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one count of choking suffocation and strangulation and one count of wilful damage.

The police prosecutor told the court they held concerns for the man’s victim upon his release.

“The aggrieved is in extreme fear of him,” the police prosecutor said.

“She’s copped an absolute flogging from him.

“She did suffer injuries.

“The injuries that happened to the aggrieved are traumatic.”

The police prosecutor said the community would not settle for a light penalty.

“You cannot think that the community would support giving him only a couple of months for the injuries suffered by the aggrieved,” she said.

“The risk is just too great.”

Magistrate Deborah Vasta granted the man bail with special conditions not to step foot near his ex-partner again.

“Do not contact her,” Ms Vasta said.

He was granted bail with special conditions to report to police twice a week.

He will next appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court on February 2.
