Island schools lead way in Redland NAPLAN results after Covid chaos

If you live in the Redlands and want your primary school child to excel in reading, writing and grammar, send them to school on an island.

Results for Redlands schools sitting Naplan in 2021, were a mixed bag but two island primary schools stood out for the better-than-average performances.

Some schools in Queensland bettered their previous 2019 results, while others suffered from the Covid chaos.

It was also the first year the tests were taken online with results slightly under predictions and the first year that parents can compare performances of schools of similar backgrounds.

Topping the list for overall primary school performance was Sheldon College, which scored 1037.2 with Ormiston College’s primary school coming in second on 1001.8 and Thornlands State School coming in third with a score of 983.2.

Ormiston College was Redland’s top NAPLAN performing high school posting a score of 1225.6, nudging out Sheldon College which scored 1204.2.

Redlands College was the third ranked high school with a score of 1149.4.

But it was Dunwich State School on North Stradbroke Island and Russell Island State School which raised educators’ eyebrows.

Dunwich, which has 175 Prep to Year 6 students and 19 teachers, chalked up one of the best results with an overall score of 874.2, compared with Sheldon College’s primary school total of 1037.2.

Dunwich’s Year 3 students scored 417 in writing compared to the 375 average for similar schools and 425 for the national average.

Dunwich Year 5 students also performed well in writing, scoring 475 compared to similar schools’ average of 447 and the national average of 480.

Another island school, Russell Island State School, also showed its strength in reading, grammar and numeracy, posting an overall score of 901.2.

The school, which has 165 students and 17 teachers, scored 524 in Year 5 reading, well above the national average of 511.

In grammar, the Russell Island Year 5 students also beat the national average of 503, with a score of 532.

They also excelled in numeracy, scoring 500 and beating the national average of 495.

Ormiston College, which has 1425 students, posted above the national average in years 5, 7 and 9.

Its best result was from Year 9 students who scored 651 in grammar, beating the national average of 573.

Sheldon College was also a standout, with its Year 3 students performing above average in reading, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

They scored 526 in grammar compared to the national average of 433 and in numeracy they scored 477 compared to the national average of 403.

The school’s Year 5 students also beat the national average in grammar, scoring 571 compared to 503 nationally. Years 7 and 9 also posted scores above the national average.

Thornlands State School, which has 789 students, punched above its weight with its Year 3 students scoring well above the national average in reading, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

Thornlands Year 5 also excelled in grammar scoring 547 above the national average of 503.

Worst performer was Bay View State school, which performed below the national average in Year 3 and Year 5.

Cleveland State School Year 3 also posted scores well under the national average.
