Appearing via phone at the Cleveland Magistrates Court, Dylan Joseph Murphy, 37, pleaded guilty to five counts of breaching bail conditions, possessing dangerous drugs, entering premises to commit an indictable offence and attempted enter premises to commit an indictable offence.

The court heard Murphy interfered with his ankle bracelet which, held together with a black plastic tie, fell apart under police inspection.

Murphy was carefully tracked between March 20 and April 21 as he attempted to travel incognito during the early morning hours on his pushbike in Bulimba and Norman Park.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Angela Tetley said Murphy, accompanied by another male, broke into Lourdes Hill College on September 21 last year to steal between $200 – $300 from a vending machine and attempted to break into a local gym on October 12 last year.

Murphy was also found in possession of methamphetamine when he was intercepted by police on Wynnum Rd in Wynnum West on March 14 this year.

Sgt Tetley said Murphy’s offending was aggravated by occurring while he was on a suspended sentence for a previous breach of bail.

Defence solicitor Jim Coburn said his client’s furtive attempts at travel while on bail spoke to his “immense stupidity”.

Mr Coburn said Murphy had been undone by a relapse into drugs in 2018 but had since committed himself to detox at a New Farm clinic.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta sentenced Murphy to nine months of imprisonment, with immediate release on nine months’ parole.

“See what drugs do to you?” Ms Vasta said.

“It destroys your life.”
