Hazard reduction burns for southeast Queensland island

Hazard reduction burns will be conducted throughout the week on a southeast Queensland island.

RESIDENTS of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) can expect some smoke in the air as Redland City Council plan to undertake hazard reduction burns from today.

SUBSCRIPTION DEAL: $1 A DAY FOR THE FIRST 12 WEEKS. MIN COST $28

Council in conjunction with Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services will conduct multiple burns throughout the week at Point Lookout, if weather permits.

Queensland Health advised to avoid outdoor physical activity, stay indoors and keep windows closed, and for those with heart or lung conditions to take extra care.

Council stated the planned burns were necessary to reduce the volume of forest litter fuel which will in turn assist with hazard reduction and provide the correct conditions for native regeneration.

The planned burns will commence today and conclude on Friday.
