A skipper, working on a bay island passenger ferry, is recovering from facial, neck and shoulder injuries after being bashed while loading the boat for departure this month.

Sealink employee Stephen Spencer was at the Weinam Creek ferry terminal at Redland Bay on the afternoon of February 10 when he was attacked.

The Russell Island man also suffered damaged teeth in the incident which occurred just after 5pm.

Mr Spencer was unable to talk to the media but gave passengers an update via Facebook.

“Hi everyone, as my lovely wife has mentioned, I am home recovering from facial, neck and shoulder injuries with some damaged teeth thrown in for good measure,” he wrote.

“As luck would have it, I was able to block two punches with my face lol [sic].

“The one from behind, I never saw coming, so it seems I don’t have eyes in the back of my head.

“To those who assisted, thankyou so much, we have a great little community for sure.”

Sealink said police were investigating the incident.

Police said nobody had been charged and investigations would continue with CCTV footage.

Passengers have also taken to Facebook to call on Sealink to step up security at the ferry terminal and onboard.

Ferry user Pat Craigie arrived at the scene after police and paramedics.

“All workers must be safe at work. All the deckies and skippers do a mighty job. It is a feature service.

“I arrived at the ferry wharf just after the police. It was all very harrowing.

“My heart goes out to Stephen and all who were present. The police and paramedics did a great job.”
