Croissants from a renowned French baker, meat from a prize-winning gourmet butcher and fresh coffee — the latest Coles Local supermarket to open in Brisbane has customers amazed.

The new Coles Local officially opened at Coorparoo in Brisbane’s southside on Friday morning, November 3, just days ahead of the 51st anniversary of the original Coles on the same site.

It offered the most eye-popping range yet for the new small format supermarket concept, which debuted in Queensland only a few years ago.

Grab-and-go convenience meals, a self-serve coffee machine and self-serve pasta greeted customers at the entrance.

There was also a self-squeeze orange juice machine, single-serve ice cream cart and even a bread warmer with self-serve bread slicer for the sourdough loaves from the renowned King Street Bakery.

WHAT SHOPPERS THINK OF THE NEW STORE

The bakery, an offshoot of the famed Montrachet French restaurant in Bowen Hills, would also supply its baguettes and sourdough batard loafs.

Wild Breads would supply its croissants and jam and chocolate donuts.

Award-winning Ashgrove and Rosalie butchery Meat at Billy’s has agreed to supply pre-packaged meats.

Among the early customers through the door this morning was Gerry Giardullo, whose parents were the first customers to walk through the door when Coles Coorparoo opened half a century ago.

“It’s changed a lot. You can get everything now,’’ he said.

One of the sweet treats on offer was New York-style, handmade cookie dough by Thicc Cookies which could be baked fresh at home.

The new-look Coles Local, which featured an underground Click & Collect, also had an in-store mural paying homage to the suburban lifestyle of Coorparoo.

Artist Jimmy Patch said the mural highlighted the suburb’s history as a hub of industry and

service, from local department stores to trams.

Coles Local Coorparoo is at 252 Old Cleveland Rd and open from 7am–9pm, Monday to Saturday and 9am–6pm on Sunday.
