A dramatic redevelopment of a historical southeast Queensland marina is underway with aerial photography showing the footprint of an “exclusive” residential development seeing strong sales before a single block has been laid.
Developers say a third of the coming Wayfarer Residences in Auster Street in Redland Bay have been sold, with negotiations underway for the circa $1.4 million penthouse.
The development of six townhouses and 27 units boasts a “rare” northerly aspect, and heralds a comprehensive redevelopment of a marina untouched in decades.
Where previously stood an abandoned warehouse, boatshed and a residence, now the eye meets only a cleared plot awaiting construction.
It comes as Redland Investment Corporation gives the green light for a massive redevelopment of Weinam Creek that includes extensive parking facilities, apartments and infrastructure improvement.
Developer and Contrast Constructions Director Bradley Durkin said the onslaught of development in the area – construction for a full-line Woolworths is already underway at a nearby village – shows Redland Bay is finally getting the amenity long enjoyed by neighbouring suburbs, such as Victoria Point.
Mr Durkin said significant population growth driven by behemoth developments like Lendlease’s Shoreline necessitated improved infrastructure in the area.
The reception to Wayfarer Residences has been “great”, although Mr Durkin was quick to distinguish theirs as a “quite small and more exclusive offering” ranging in price from the $600 thousands up.
Located on a one-way street the boutique development will see all of its parking subterranean, which Mr Durkin assured will help preserve access to the intimate street.
Nearby is the Pelican’s View Cafe to which customers flock for uninterrupted Moreton Bay views.
And views are this development’s major drawcard.
Mr Durkin said most waterfront properties in Queensland have an eastern aspect, where Wayfarer Residences face northerly.
It comes as a pedestrian bridge connecting the Weinam Creek ferry terminal to Auster Street opened some months ago.
It now services the major new car park at Moores Road, which has caused consternation among some residents.
Built on a flood plain the car park caters to hundreds of vehicles and has come under fire from some, who fear a loss of liveability in the previously secluded locale.
Construction on Wayfarer Residences is due to start around May “with an 18-month construction program”.
