Crestmead’s David John Outhwaite, 28, granted bail for alleged meth supply

A young man granted a second chance at life after a motorcycle accident chose to nonetheless peddle drugs, police have alleged at a court.

A life-changing motorcycle accident did not dissuade a 28-year-old man from allegedly poisoning his community by supplying meth, a court has heard.

Appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court on Tuesday David John Outhwaite, 28, of Crestmead was granted bail after he indicated he would plead guilty.

He faces charges that include five counts of supplying dangerous drugs, possessing a knife in public and possessing drug utensils, among others.

Police will allege Outhwaite was on parole for similar offending when he was intercepted as a passenger in a vehicle on September 4 last year in Capalaba.

Officers allegedly found evidence of meth and cannabis supply on his mobile phone and observed a large hunting knife in his possession.

It came on the back of a five-page criminal and seven-page traffic history.

Noting multiple previous jail sentences for related offending, a police prosecutor said the defendant posed too great a risk to the community for a release on bail.

Outhwaite’s defence solicitor said their client had in June last year suffered a very serious motorcycle accident which left him with an acquired brain injury and had recently heard he may be a father.

The court heard Outhwaite had been remanded since October 11 and risked spending too much time in custody should he not be granted bail.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta noted the defendant’s accident had preceded his alleged offending and ought to have served as a wakeup call.

Ms Vasta noted Outhwaite’s significant period in pre-sentence custody and granted him bail release.

He is next due to appear in court on May 31.
