Locations including popular camping spots on North Stradbroke Island will be left vacant this Easter following an announcement by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today.
“School holidays is cancelled,” she said, saying there would be a “break” but not a holiday.
HOW CORONAVIRUS IS AFFECTING BAY ISLANDS
The ban will also leave tourism-dependent businesses on the islands with no clientele, a severe downturn to the previously expected holiday seasons — which were to be boosted after sand mining on North Stradbroke Island was stopped last year, leaving tourism as the region’s top income source.
The camping ban comes as Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams asked the State Disaster co-ordination centre to stop all non-essential travel to and from the southern Moreton Bay islands.
Cr Williams also has asked tourists and those with holiday homes on the islands, including North Stradbroke Island, to stay away during the Easter holidays.
