A mixture of youth and experience combined for Sandgate-Redcliffe in a milestone win over top side Gold Coast in the Katherine Raymont Shield women’s first grade competition last weekend.
Fairholme College schoolgirl Georgia Voll, one of many under 18 players in the Gators team at the moment, scored her maiden first grade century (119 not out) alongside veteran Shelly Savage (102 not out).
The pair lifted Sandgate-Redcliffe from 2-42 to 2-271 in 50 overs.
In reply, the Gators dismissed Gold Coast (206).
Voll drives from outside of Toowoomba to play with the bayside club and her rewarded was a stunning 100.
“We spoke about a few things with her and she batted well,’’ said coach Bruce Arrold.
He also praised Savage who, having just returned from an over 35 representative tournament, has been adding experience to a line-up missing a host of players during to injury or illness.
“She came up and has batted really well,’’ Arrold said.
The coach was just as impressed with the bowling and fielding effort spearheaded by a four wicket haul to all-rounder Julia Cavanough.
Arrold said the win would install self belief in his young group.
“Their belief is the big one,’’ he said.
“For us, it is a major thing. We cemented another couple of bricks in the wall.
“We are becoming more resilient.’’
The Sandgate-Redcliffe men were overrun in the Bulls Masters Premier grade, with Ipswich Logan scoring 371 in reply to the Gators 271 on day one.
