Woolworths has transformed its Everton Park supermarket into a ‘priority delivery hub’ (PDH) to meet the surge in demand for home deliveries because of the coronavirus outbreak.

It will be one of 100 made into PDHs to allow more home deliveries to what Woolworths calls ‘priority assistance’ customers such as those in self-isolation.

As part of the move, which started today, trading hours will be cut to 9am - 6pm, Monday to Sunday, and there will be no community hour.

Woolworths will use the extra hours the supermarket is not open to customers to pick online orders.

It said there would be a focus on meeting the increased demand from ‘priority assistance’ customers which included the elderly, people with disability, those with compromised immunity and people in mandatory isolation.

Woolworths is also working closely with “last-mile” delivery partners, Sherpa and Drive Yello, to expand their driver base to support more rapid deliveries.

Woolworths Group chief executive officer Brad Banducci said: “We understand many of our older or more vulnerable customers will be anxious about their food and grocery needs in the weeks ahead.

“Going to the supermarket is a key part of everyday life for many of them, and some will have never even considered ordering groceries online before,” Mr Banducci said.

“We’re working at pace to reshape our business, and thanks to the support of the likes of Australia Post and DHL, we will be able to better service those in self-isolation.”
