A 34-year-old woman hit her partner several times with a bamboo stick during an argument over his drinking, a Brisbane court heard today.

Police were called but the partner told them he did not fear the woman and was happy for her to return to the house, the police prosecutor said in Sandgate Magistrates Court.

The woman was convicted and sentenced to 18 months probation, with conditions including she must participate in counselling or other programs as directed.

The Zillmere woman pleaded guilty, via video link, to contravening a domestic violence order on May 10.

The prosecutor said the woman and her partner had started arguing after visiting the partner’s mother.

“The respondent picked up a bamboo stick – 1200mm long and 40 to 50mm thick – and hit the aggrieved on his right arm about four or five times,” the prosecutor said.

He said police were called and when they arrived they could hear female and male voices yelling.

“The aggrieved said he is in no fear of her and is happy for her to return to the house,” the prosecutor said.

The woman’s solicitor said she had been with her partner for three years and “she said the argument was in relation to his drinking”.
