Police will ramp up patrols on popular tourist roads near Brisbane after locals complained hoons had turned them into a racetrack since COVID-19 restrictions were eased.

Police say they will increase traffic enforcement on mountain roads outside Brisbane after fed-up residents started talking about setting up road blocks to put an end to all night hooning.

Yesterday, Quest Community News reported the Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious residents were fed up with hoons racing along Mt Nebo Rd, Mt Glorious Rd and Northbrook Parkway through the night.

Some residents said this could go on all night and the noise could be heard for kilometres.

One said some had even been talking about organising road blocks.

Today Senior Sergeant Rob Wann, acting officer-in-charge of The Gap station, said police would act.

“Police from The Gap and Ferny Grove Police Divisions, along with their Road Policing Command counterparts, would like to reassure members of our local mountain communities, that Inner West Police will increase and continue traffic enforcement on mountain roads to defer any further negative behaviour,” Sen Sgt Wann said.

“Any drivers, riders or cyclists detected breaking or flaunting the road rules on the mountains will be subjected to enforcement action.”

He said police had seen a notable increase in the general community visiting these areas for “exercise” recently.

“This has subsequently led to an increase in traffic on the two mountains, and a noticeable associated increase in vehicular related noise from this traffic.

“Regretfully, some road users are behaving in a manner that is unacceptable and putting themselves and the lives of others at risk.”

At Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious between May 2 and May 13 police issued four Traffic Infringement Notifications (TINS) for speeding, four for crossing double white lines and one for a defective vehicle.
