There’s one thing you should never ask a vegan

WHAT’S the most annoying question you can ask a vegan and it’s not is Chris Hemsworth really vegan? Brisbane’s hottest vegan Brad Dalrymple will tell you.

What’s the most annoying question you can ask a vegan and it’s not is Chris Hemsworth really vegan?

Brisbane’s Vegan poster boy Brad Dalrymple, who was named one of the city’s hottest vegans last month by international agency PETA, says people always ask: “where do you get your protein”.

To answer the question: quinoa, soy milk, oat, tofu, avocado, broccoli, asparagus, mushroom, chickpea, chia, peas, spinach, almond, soya beans, cauliflower and lentils (are just a few).

Becoming a vegan initially for environmental reasons, (to minimise his own personal impact on the planet), the environmental engineer said nowadays “it’s pretty much everything - particularly my personal health and athletic performance to minimise cruelty to other sentient beings.”

We asked Brad a few questions about being vegan.

What is your favourite vegan dish?

My homemade cacao and peanut-butter smoothie will blow your mind.

Are you noticing a change in acceptance of being vegan?

Totally. There’s just a LOT more vegans nowadays. If food-type places don’t cater for us, they just don’t get our business.

What is your favourite place to eat in Brisbane

A couple of places is cool too? The Evolve Organics cafe at Newstead.

Why was the competition important to you.

It’s a super way to help promote the personal benefits of being vegan.

What’s next for you?

My next misadventure is to ride my bike from Gold Coast to Adelaide on the “Tour de Froth”

What is one change you hope to see for animals in Australia soon?

I don’t need to hope. Aussies everywhere are seeing the benefits of adopting a more plant-based diet. The dairy industry probably has 10 years left before it’s cactus. The meat and egg industry will go the same way some time after (maybe in 20-30 years). If we can live an awesome life without harming others, why would we ?

Vegan cruising it’s a thing

Hottest food trend globally

Dalrymple, who initially went vegan to do his part for the environment, says he now sees the huge benefits for both animals and his own health.

“I use my athletic achievements in triathlon to demonstrate to friends, family, and followers that a plant-based (vegan) diet can maximise your health and performance,” he said.

He is the current Queensland long-course triathlon champion for his age group and recent winner of the national titles in sprint and Olympic distance triathlon.

PETA spokeswoman Emily Rice said the competition highlighted the “living example of the strength and vitality that can come from vegan eating.

“There’s nothing more attractive than someone who is committed to helping animals and the environment, and it doesn’t hurt that vegans are, on average, healthier and more energetic than their meat-eating peers,” Ms Rice said.
