Tasers were needed to subdue the men after a simple traffic stop turned ugly in Bracken Ridge

The dog squad were called to Bracken Ridge when witnesses saw a group of men running through Barrett St Reserve.

Police dogs and tasers were used to bring two Bracken Ridge men into custody after they ran a red light in Geebung, the Sandgate Magistrates Court heard today.

Shambel Peter Lam Bangud, 32, and Girum Gebayaw Mekonnen, 19, were seen in a Toyota RAV4 that sped through a red light on Newman Rd just after 1am on Friday, August 14.

Witnesses saw the car pull into Barrett St Reserve in Bracken Ridge, where the police dog squad later found the men hidden away in a concrete rotunda.

When officers approached, the men took off on foot through the park, ignoring police commands and yelling abuse at them.

Girum Gebayaw Mekonnen was let off without a conviction recorded due to his young age and relatively clean history.

The police prosecutor told the court that as officers drew closer to Mekonnen he pushed them away and “attempted to assault them”, prompting the use of a police taser.

Bangud “ran around the police dog and dog handler” before he was eventually subdued and placed in handcuffs.

Mekonnen and Bangud were taken to the watch house and each charged with one count of obstructing a police officer.

Mekonnen pleaded guilty and was fined $450. No conviction was recorded.

Bangud pleaded guilty and was fined $700. A conviction was recorded, due to his previous history.
