A Brisbane girls school has been named a finalist in three categories of the prestigious Australian Education Awards.

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School Principal Ros Curtis is in the running for Principal of the Year (non-government) for the second consecutive year. She is one of eight finalists Australia-wide and four from Queensland.

The Ascot school is also a finalist for Best STEM Program, and is again vying for the title of Boarding School of the Year, after winning this category in 2019.

Ms Curtis said: “It’s a testament to the school that St Margaret’s is represented in three categories – a reflection on the depth of leadership and the teams and the community that sit behind them.

“Personally, it’s an honour to be recognised, but in saying that not one person leads a school – it’s the strength and quality of our staff and strong leadership team that contributes to our overall success,” she said.

Since her appointment in 2011, Ms Curtis has made it her priority to improve and sustain academic outcomes, enhance the school’s facilities, attract and maintain high quality teaching staff and pioneer innovation across all areas of teaching and learning.

In 2019, for the third consecutive year, St Margaret’s placed in the top 15 Queensland schools across all four categories for NAPLAN (Years 3, 5, 7, and 9).

For the last two consecutive years, St Margaret’s has been the recipient of Innovative Schools awards – in 2018 for its leading academic advising program and in 2019 for St Margaret’s Plus, a program created in response to the growing call for wider recognition and development of students’ skills beyond academic assessment.

Head of St Margaret’s Science and Technology Faculty, Chris Dunn, said being named a finalist for Best STEM Program was a wonderful endorsement for the education program at St Margaret’s.

“We have incredibly dedicated and talented STEM teaching staff for whom this nomination provides well-deserved recognition but we also have aspirations of being the leading Australian girls school in Science, Technology and STEM education so to be named as a finalist for Best STEM Program validates our hard work and will inspire us to continue innovating and developing our practices,” Mr Dunn said.

Other Australian Education Awards finalists in Brisbane are:

St Paul’s School, Bald Hills – primary school of the year (non-government) / secondary school of the year (non-government)

Brigidine College, Indooroopilly – best professional learning program

Stuartholme School, Toowong – best professional learning program

Moreton Bay College, Manly West – best student wellbeing program

Winners will be announced at the Australian Education Awards on November 6 in Sydney.
