Dennis Hogan gains strength for next world title fight after narrowly missing the belt this year

Sometimes in sport when an athlete has a near miss and fails to achieve a goal, it flattens them rather than makes them stronger.

This is not the case for boxer Dennis Hogan who feels 10 foot tall and with shoulders as wide as the Function Well gym he trains in at Teneriffe.

Hogan is preparing for his second world title bout of the year, this time against Jermall Charlo in New York on December 7.

This was after Hogan had a near miss when he was beaten by a points decision in a world title fight against Jaime Munguia in Mexico during April. It was a bout many good judges thought Hogan won, or at absolute worst drew.

“It is a crazy thing but I gained confidence from that, knowing that I could go down there and do that,’’ Hogan said.

“My vision has always been so clear, that I will be the world champion.

“And I remember the night after (the Munguia decision) I was thinking ‘it is okay, I still feel like a champion and I will get that belt’.

“Then I kept training because I knew my opportunity would come again and it certainly has in an even greater form.’’

This time Hogan will be fighting for the WBC middleweight and, like his lead-up to the Munguia bout, Hogan will take his team to a USA-based training camp ahead of the encounter.

He was in Santa Monica ahead of fighting Munguia in Mexico, but this time he will set-up in Miami on the east coast ahead of his clash in Brooklyn.

On board with him will be his personal chef Mark Rockley, former NRL player Chris Muckert (conditioner), padman Zach Bacigalupo and chef sponsor Murray Thornton of Devcorp.

Hogan’s chief trainer, Glenn Rushton from the Stretton Boxing Club, will then join him.

Rushton is famous for taking Jeff Horn to the world title (2017) and went within a whisker of guiding Hogan to boxing’s top prize against Munguia.

“The people are around me because of my dream from the start to become a world champion,’’ Hogan said.

“Everybody who has come around has been perfect in giving me strength and support.

“I certainly believe I have the perfect team now.’’
