From a house tucked away in a suburban street on Brisbane’s northside, singer songwriter Brad McCaw has been busy.

Sitting at his kitchen table, the singer has used lockdown to his advantage finishing an album that has been five years in the making.

The Albany Creek artist has just released his first track ‘So Good’ complete with a Covid-19 friendly music video, of course.

“I’m just excited that people get to see it and it’s been so well received,” Mr McCaw said.

“It’s very DIY, I put the word out to fans and said ‘do you want to be in a video and I was surprised to see how many people wanted to do it.”

The upbeat track with soulful pop-rock feels is just what the doctor ordered.

Mr McCaw collaborated with legendary artist and producer Louis Shelton to complete his debut album, Worried Minds, which is set to be released in the summer of next year.

It will also feature the likes of legendary bass player Nathan East, James Morrison and Australian Idol alum Paulini Curuenavuli.

“It really is a tribute to people like Billy Joel, Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Phil Collins,” he said.

“Elton John, Peter Allen- all the piano guys, we’re kind of bringing back the piano men.

“It’s really just fun music that makes you feel good.”

And while the pandemic has played havoc with his plans to tour – he admits it was probably just what he needed to finish off his passion project, the first in what he hopes is a long line of albums to come.

“If it wasn’t for Covid I don’t know if I would be here, 100 per cent,” Mr McCaw said.

“It’s crazy to say that, it has changed my entire career, my entire trajectory.

“Lockdown is happening, I needed a project so I just thought let’s go back and finish this album.

“And then I was like this is what I’ve meant to have been doing my entire life.”

Mr McCaw has been involved in the industry for 15 years having a crack at everything he possibly could, even an AFL grand final.

He began singing classical music with the Ten Tenors, performed in musicals Rent and Les Miserables, and put together his own semi-autobiographical musical.

But his goal now is to ‘music like his idols’. and maybe one in particular.

“It has to be Billy Joel, he was the first guy that made me want to write music,” he said.

“The first pop song I ever played was ‘She’s got a Way’ and that was when I was 17.”

He credits a high-school friend with introducing him to the music he most identifies with.

“I had a best mate who kept playing me old music all of my young days and I didn’t take a lick of notice.

“Then later I came back to teach me all this stuff, it’s funny it came back to me later on.

“I think the gift of these lockdowns is it’s helped me return to what I’ve been wanting to do for all this time.

“And it’s the right time for me to do it because of all the experiences I’ve had.”
