Sandgate court: 27-year-old woman faces court over domestic violence orders

A woman who threatened to stab her parents and punched her mother in the head while she slept has faced court.

A Brisbane woman threatened to stab her parents and punched her own mother in the head as she slept, a court has heard.

The 27-year-old appeared via video link as she faced 13 charges in the Sandgate Magistrates Court.

The spate of charges included several contraventions of a domestic violence order and breaches of bail conditions.

The Northgate woman pleaded guilty to all charges.

The court heard her offending took place from March of 2020 through to August this year.

The police prosecutor told the court the “underlying theme present in all of the offending is really the defendants volatile mental state”.

“The aggrieved, the main persons, being the defendant’s parents, the were instances where she has caused damage, smashed porcelain plate,” he said.

“There were also further allegations against herself but also unfortunately that is then when she’s threatened her parents to stab them with a knife.

“Most recently … it does escalate in terms of the domestic violence offending most recently with physical violence against the aggrieved.”

The court was told the woman’s parents allowed her to stay at their residence in Brisbane.

“She’s (the aggrieved) has woken in the early morning to the defendant punching her in the face and then causing damage to property in the kitchen,” the police prosecutor told the court.

“In August of this year, the defendant has picked up a vase, smashed it on to the floor and then punched the aggrieved in the head with a closed fist.”

The police prosecutor requested the court continue the woman’s supervision, placing her on a period of probation.

The woman’s lawyer told the court her client had “clear mental health issues” including drug-induced psychosis.

“She will be very happy to see the end of this matter,” the woman’s lawyer said.

“She’s very eager to come out … she was using methamphetamines at the time and consequently she has these interactions with her family.”

The court heard the Northgate resident attended Sandgate High School and worked in various roles in hospitality previously.

“When she is sober and medicated she is very capable, she certainly does have some significant hurdles to face,” her lawyer said.

Magistrate Jennifer Batts said she took into account all the matters heard plus the woman’s early pleas of guilty.

The woman was convicted and sentenced to 18 months probation.

She is eligible for release and has been warned she must report and not commit another offence while on probation.
