The family of a young man killed in a motorcycle crash near Brisbane Airport has described the “emptiness” they they feel after the heartbreaking loss of their beloved son and brother.
Pinkenba resident Jake Canaway’s black Yamaha was found by a passing motorist beside Main Myrtletown Rd just after 4pm on Sunday.
The 25-year-old was found nearby and had died from his injuries.
Mr Canaway’s mother Lynn said her son was just going out for a normal ride, as he loved riding around the backstreets near the airport.
She said her family’s hearts were broken following the tragedy. He was only found after a passing motorist stopped to investigate the bike on the side of the road.
“Jake was born in Pinkenba and lived here for most of his life,” she said.
“Being a small community everyone knew and loved him. He was very caring and polite in nature to everyone. He never had a mean bone in his body.
“He was the light in my life, and told me he loved me every day and I would always respond with ‘I love you more’.
“He was the best little brother to his sister, Nicole, and the bond was like no other. He would often go riding with his father and sister.”
Mrs Canaway said they were a very close family.
“Now we have an emptiness that has destroyed us,” she said.
“With so much love from our friends and community we will eventually get through this.
“I have never heard a bad word about him from anyone and his friends are all shocked and devastated.
“We all have fond and happy memories of this fun-loving guy.”
His sister said she was devastated to lose him.
“With tears streaming down my face, he was my rock, my brother, my best friend and the world is never going to be the same again,” she said.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started by family friend Kelli Cousins and another started by Rosie Taoso as they try and raise up to $10,000 to help the Canaways.
“Jake was a beautiful, caring, talented and very respectful young man who had been taken from his family and friends way too early, simply doing what he loved, taking a cruise on a Sunday afternoon on his beloved bike,” Ms Cousins said.
Ms Taoso, whose page has raised alost $1000 already, said the Pinkenba community was in shock as Mr Canaway was “taken too soon” after taking a cruise on his beloved bike.
“The Canaway’s have been such a big part of my life and our town - Pinkenba,” she said.
“I have started this page for anyone who wants to support them during this difficult time.
“I am so sorry that this happened to you Jakey I will always keep our memories close, thanks for being that cute little kid who was his sisters shadow.
“Sending all of our love to your beautiful family during this time.
“RIP Jakey - forever 25.”
The cause of the crash is still unknown and the police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
