Northern Brisbane man risked going back to jail after being caught growing drugs while on parole

The man had two cannabis plants growing in his back yard when police raided his Taigum home.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A northside man has been placed on probation after police found him growing cannabis plants in his backyard.

Jacob James Graham pleaded guilty at Pine Rivers Magistrates Court to producing cannabis, possessing cannabis, possessing cannabis seeds and possessing drug utensils.

On December 10, 2019 police searched the Taigum house Graham was living at and found a mature cannabis plant, a juvenile cannabis plant, 90 grams of dried cannabis, 34 cannabis seeds, and multiple drug utensils.

The court heard Graham, 25, had been growing the plants between January 1, 2019 and December 10, during which time he was serving parole.

The court heard he had previously been a meth user but had been clean for two years but he still struggled with cannabis use.

Since the offending he and his partner have moved away from Taigum to get away from the crowd he was associating with.

Magistrate Melanie Ho said Graham was lucky he had been arrested after his parole had ended and not earlier in the year when he had still been growing.

“The facts (of the offending) are not that serious,” she said.

“What makes it serious … was that you committed the charge whilst serving a sentence of imprisonment.

“You could have risked going back to prison.

“You’re only 25 and you don’t want to be going back to jail.”

Graham was sentenced to 12 months of probation, a conviction was recorded.
