Man flees police, hides in back yards with friend’s drug gear

A man hid from police in suburban back yards and flailed around trying to stop them arresting him, while carrying drug paraphernalia that was not his.

When police spotlights shone on Finn William Travers and his friends partying in a park, the young men panicked.

Travers grabbed a handful of drug utensils, even though he was not using drugs, and ran through three back yards before police caught up.

He pleaded guilty at Pine Rivers Magistrates Court to charges including trespassing, obstructing police and possessing drug utensils.

Police were called to the Ferny Hills park about 10.20pm on April 28 after repeated complaints of a group of loud people loitering around.

The court heard the group, including 20-year-old Travers, was seated around a park table.

Police shone their lights on the people and they grabbed their things and ran.

Despite police telling them to stop, Travers ran through a gate into a nearby house.

The occupants saw him and began locking entrances to make sure he could not get inside.

He then hid into another backyard, before that house’s occupants told police he was there.

He ran into a third yard before police caught him.

Travers then refused to comply with police and “flailed his arms around” before he was eventually arrested.

Police found drug scales and utensils on him.

Travers told the court he had given up drugs and was not using them on that night.

“My mate was smoking and I was drinking. I don’t do drugs they were getting me into trouble,” he said.

The court heard he had made a foolish decision and was remorseful for running from police.

Travers was fined $500. No conviction was recorded.
