Man sprayed partner of seven years in the eyes with carpet cleaner in ‘play fight’

The man told police they had been ‘play fighting’ when he sprayed his long-term partner in the face with a cleaning liquid

Report shows domestic violence surged during COVID-19 lockdowns

A man sprayed carpet cleaning fluid in his partner’s eyes in a “play fight” on the side of a Brisbane street.

The man, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty at Pine Rivers Magistrates Court to breaching a domestic violence order and drugs charges.

On January 13 police were called to a Wooloowin street where residents had reported a couple fighting.

When police arrived the distressed woman was washing out her eyes with water after the man had sprayed her in the face with carpet cleaner.

The 23-year-old man told police they were “play fighting” when it happened and said he had sprayed her on the clothes not in the face.

The couple had previously been sleeping in a Lawnton community centre. During the night the woman woke him up to ask what the time was.

She then got up and grabbed an air mattress at which point he began yelling at her in a rage.

The court heard his yelling scared her and she began packing her bags to leave. He kept yelling at her telling her to stop packing her bags. He threw her phone away from her and snapped a pair of prescription glasses in half.

The man had also been found in possession of cannabis in a car parked outside the Strathpine Probation and Parole office.

The man’s lawyer Greg Robson said despite the charges the two had a “strong relationship” and had been together for seven years.

Mr Robson said the man had been subjected to domestic violence as a child.

Acting Magistrate Deborah Turner said the man was in a position to “end the cycle of domestic violence” he had found himself in.

“You should be treating (your partner) with dignity at all times,” she said.

“Your life doesn’t have to continue to be controlled by domestic violence. But only you can change that.”

The man was placed on probation.
