‘It wasn’t cool’: Brisbane man draws on father’s war experience to frighten morning walkers

It was just 6am when the man started drunkenly yelling and swearing at Shorncliffe pier.

Australia's Court System

A sunny Tuesday morning at the Shorncliffe pier took a dark turn when young Michael James O’Callaghan began to drunkenly threaten people with explosives, the Sandgate Magistrates Court heard today.

Police received multiple reports of a drunk man swearing and yelling at passers-by at around 6am on September 15, according to police prosecutor sergeant Troy Newman.

Sgt Newman told the court O’Callaghan was found yelling, “F**k you all, I’ve been in the war!”

“I’ll blow these c***s up!”

As police approached, O’Callaghan was observed to be muttering to himself, with an open alcohol container beside him.

O’Callaghan told police he was simply “yelling at all the druggies” and admitted it wasn’t him that went to war, but rather his father who had served in Afghanistan.

When police tried to put O’Callaghan in their police car to take him to the watch house he made his body limp, falling to the ground and forcing police to carry him.

O’Callaghan pleaded guilty to one charge of public nuisance and one charge of obstructing a police officer.

“I don’t think I’ll be doing that again,” he told the court.

“It’s not really cool.”

He was convicted and fined $450.
