It was one of the first to open its doors ahead of its brand’s international coffee takeover but now this longstanding cafe, in Brisbane’s premier shopping strip, will close its doors.
The Coffee Club Ascot is expected to shut up shop next month, after more than 22 years in operation.
The cafe is the 37th Coffee Club to open since the brand — which now operates about 400 stores in nine countries — launched in Brisbane 1989.
It has been a community hub in the tight-knit area, providing the backdrop for race carnival fashion parades, morning teas and innumerable family get-togethers.
However all of that will come to an end in weeks with new tenants for the cafe, nestled in the Ascot Boulevard at 137 Racecourse Rd and just metres from Eagle Farm racecourse, being sought now for the tenancy which will be available from March.
“For many years, this site has enjoyed ‘first option’ status for breakfast, lunches and a central meeting place for coffee,” says the listing by Albion-based agency Commercial Brisbane.
The closure of the iconic cafe follows suit from rival chain Cafe 63, which closed its oldest restaurant — the brand’s founding venue — on the same street last year however in good news for the street, opened a new venue nearby.
