IF you have been meaning to do a bit of exercise and you have a kayak lying in the back yard, now you have a good excuse to use it and catch a feed at the same time.

The autumn months fish very well in our northern waters and fishing as an individual in your kayak or small dinghy there are quite a few opportunities.

The Pine and Hayes Inlet is predominately bream and flathead catches at the moment, with a few whiting mixed through it.

Most of the catches have been in the lower reaches and around the bridges.

You will find a few mud crabs and prawns in the creeks and rivers, with the biggest concentration of prawns still out in front of Nudgee, though you may want to avoid the crowds.

Sand crab catches have been reasonable in the same areas and there are also a few out along the front of Redcliffe and out from Scarborough Boat Harbour.

We are just starting to see a couple of snapper show up along here too, around the small reef areas.

It shouldn’t be too long before the tailor start to come in here too, chasing the pike and hardiheads.

Those glorious autumn mornings are a great time to fish in front of Redcliffe with an early pre-dawn start recommended.

Land-based anglers are finding a few bream and whiting on the southern end of Bribie Island from Red Beach around to Skirmish Point.

You can walk around from either location to find a spot to fish. Take a few lures with you as the tailor will be showing up here and you never know when a school might pop up right in front of you.

A lot of bait moves around this southern end of the island and catches can be quite good.
