Circus delivers online training and shows to homes during coronavirus lockdown

The coronavirus lockdown is giving circus fans the chance to take part in online training from Brisbane’s best performers and watch Australian circus shows from the comfort of their home. WATCH VIDEO HERE

Flipside Circus performance troupe member Jedda Bell is taking part in Flipside's online Circus At Home program during the coronavirus lockdown.

Alderley-based Flipside Circus has turned to the internet to keep participants engaged and to share its love of circus during the COVID-19 crisis.

Flipside, Queensland’s largest youth arts company, as partnered with renowned Australian circus companies to create Circus at Home which includes a series of short prerecorded sessions for the youngest in the family, a series of Australian circus shows to watch online and Flipside’s online circus training program.

Working with Cluster Arts, Vulcana, A Goot Catch, Casus Circus and Flying Fruit Fly Circus it is offering 20 minute excerpts of their multi-award-winning shows on youtube and vimeo channels at no cost and open to the public until April 30 at https://www.facebook.com/flipsidecircus

Flipside is also developing an online training program for term two to keep its students active and in training.

Flipside Circus performance troupe member Luke Whitefield hones his skills with the help of online training.

It has run two trials sessions through videoconferencing app Zoom with 20 participants.

Long term, Flipside will provide these online training programs to the wider community, including regional and remote Queensland.

For younger circus fans it is offering a series of short prerecorded sessions featuring Flipside trainer Phoebe taking them though a warm-up, jumps, balancing and DIY obstacle.

Flipside’s Performance troupe member Luke Whitefield said: “Online training is a great way to stay active while we can’t go to training, and to catch up with my circus friends when we can’t see each other in person”.

Flipside Circus wins two Matilda Awards

Amy Trotman, the mother of a performance troupe member, said: “The Zoom classes have been a great distraction and moment of continuity and relative normality for my daughter.

My other son and partner are also doing classes online and there’s been a few moments where I’ve been surrounded by my family exercising, stretching and laughing with mates all while I’m trying to get something done for work.”

Performance troupe member Jedda Bell said the online classes had been “a great way to be connected with my circus family and stay active”.

Flipside Circus chief executive officer and creative director Robert Kronk said COVID-19 had highlighted the importance of what Flipside did.

“Our mission is to empower communities through circus,” Mr Kronk said.

“We are all about making connections, looking out for each other, teamwork, resilience, agility, and celebrating achievements.

“We’re also committed to supporting the circus sector, our artists, and our staff.”
