Brisbane man with 22 pages of criminal history wanted to bail so he could make a brain surgeon appointment

Man alleged to have committed a serious assault and threatened violence had 22 pages of criminal history but had barely been to court since 2012.

Man allegedly found with $4m cash released on bail

A man who applied for bail to make a neurosurgeon appointment on Wednesday will remain behind bars.

Mark Paul Barry has been charged with serious assault and making threats of violence.

He told the court he had to get out to make a doctor’s appointment tomorrow for a spinal tumour he had been diagnosed with.

The court heard Mr Barry had 22 pages of criminal history, mostly for drugs, but had rarely been before the court in the last eight years.

Despite the lengthy criminal history, the court heard Barry has only been jailed once in 2009.

The court heard Mr Barry allegedly seriously assaulted a person and threatened more violence.

He told the court he had been diagnosed with a tumour on his spine and was booked in to see a neurosurgeon on Wednesday morning.

He said if he was not bailed he would not be able to make that appointment.

But Magistrate Melanie Ho said she had insufficient information to make a decision and requested police provide the alleged victim’s statement to the court.

The bail application was adjourned and Mr Barry was remanded in custody.
