More than 20 cafes were nominated during our search to find the northern Bayside’s best cafe – but there can only be one winner.

After the votes were counted, community favourite Mug Shots Espresso finished on top.

Located at the heart of Sandgate at 107 Brighton Rd, Mug Shots is the passion project of local coffee roaster Lee-Anne Kerr, who strives to bring each of her customers the freshest, smoothest cups of coffee around.

Consistency is key at Mug Shots, where Kerr aimed to bring the Bayside community a good cup of coffee, every time, without having to travel to the city.

Fair trade green beans are roasted in house giving customers that “plantation to you” experience and allowing the cafe to develop limited edition blends such as their single origin Mexican Chiapas, a light roasted bean with fruity aroma and light acidity.

There is a money-back guarantee that comes with the coffee at Mug Shots, as they strive to deliver consistency.

But that’s not all this beloved cafe offers - There are both sweet and savoury homemade treats for a delish morning tea, lunch, or afternoon tea.

Fans of the cafe gushed to the Bayside Star about its “awesome coffee and lots of laughs” that kept them coming back, day after day.

“(The best cafe is) without a doubt, Mugshots at Sandgate,” said regular customer Claire Jenkins for her Facebook nomination.

“I know how to find them! I just follow my nose (their coffee and food smell amazing), my ears (they’re always laughing and happy) and eyes (their smiles light up my day)!”

Celebrity Chef Matt Preston said the search for the best cafe was just the start of the Delicious Local push to help drive a food-led rebound from the effects of Covid.

“It’s clear from the vast number of nominations and votes we saw come in that local communities are rallying around their favourite eateries; supporting those food businesses who have done it tough over the past 12 months. That is exactly what we set out to achieve,” Mr Preston said.

“Don’t forget to have your say by checking out your state finalists and voting for your favourite.”

“Make sure you keep following this fantastic search and supporting your local winners – next up we’ll be on the lookout for best pizza, so get thinking …”
