New doctor follows in twin sister’s footsteps

A north Brisbane hospital has welcomed 27 new interns, including one who has started one year after his twin sister began her medical career at the same hospital.

Abhishek Mohan has become a doctor at The Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside, one year after his twin sister Aradhana started her medical career there.

ABHISHEK Mohan has started his career as a doctor at The Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside, one year after his twin sister began her medical career at the same hospital.

The decision by Mr Mohan and sister Aradhana to pursue a career in medicine was ignited in high school through their common interest in science.

Mr Mohan initially pursued this interest through a degree in pharmacy before deciding he was more suited to a career in medicine.

“I enjoyed pharmacy but decided I wanted to move into an area where I could get involved with diagnosis and treatment,” he said.

“I felt that being a doctor was something I could excel at and make a difference to people’s lives.”

Like her brother, Ms Mohan’s decision to become a doctor was driven by the prospect of being able to apply her natural aptitude for science in a field where she could help others.

“For me, becoming a doctor was an area where I could integrate science and people — two things I enjoy,” she said.

The 25-year-old Alderley twins’ choice to both start their medical career at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) is not a coincidence.

Ms Mohan said TPCH provided excellent training and support to her during her first year as a junior doctor.

“The staff at TPCH were very supportive and made me feel more confident about learning new skills as a new clinician,” she said.

Her positive experience inspired her brother to choose the hospital as the place to start his medical career.

“Even though I’m only one week in, I am extremely excited about working as a doctor in a hospital that is well known for providing excellent care to patients,” Mr Mohan said.

“It gives me a very solid ground for a highly successful career in medicine.”

Mr Mohan was one of 27 medical interns who joined TPCH as doctors in January.

The new interns participated in a week-long orientation program to familiarise themselves with the hospital, its services and clinical practice and procedures before beginning rotations through a variety of units that may include general medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and additional elective terms in other specialised areas.
