A SOUTHEAST Queensland show society is making lemonade from the COVID lemons it has been given, handing out for free more than 400 showbags it had ordered for its now-cancelled show at the end of next month.
Mount Gravatt Show Society made the announcement in April that the 2020 Annual Show would not be going ahead, shortly after the RNA announced the 2020 Ekka had also been canned.

Despite this setback, chief executive of the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Guy McEntyre said the committee has so far been “overwhelmed” by the public response to the giveaway, now in its second week, which has seen a Facebook post by the society shared more than 1300 times.
Mr McEntyre said the showbags, which include Bertie Beetle, Nestle Milkybar, Allens and Smarties to name but a few, could be obtained by liking the Mt Gravatt Show Facebook page and sharing this post:
“The society was very disappointed to not be able to put on a show this year and so that our good patrons don’t miss out, while we cannot hold the show we decided to do the show bag giveaway,” he said.
Mr McEntyre said planning has already begun on next year’s edition.
“The Society like a lot of other individuals and businesses has not been immune to the economic cost of COVID which is why we are already working hard now to make sure the show will go on in 2021,” he said.
Winners will be announced weekly on the show’s Facebook page up until July 25 – 26, the weekend the show was to be held.
