You don’t have to travel too far to feel as though you’re a world away. There are plenty of amazing options right here in the Moreton Bay Region for a staycation. Here’s five of the best.
1. Big 4 Sandstone Point Holiday Resort
It has only just opened and there’s nothing quite like it in the region. The $20 million resort overlooking beautiful Pumicestone Passage is definitely worth a visit, whether you’re bringing the family or sneaking off for a romantic getaway.
There’s 37 two and three-bedroom villas and 11 glamping tents.
The safari tents are not your average tent, with family and luxury options. Family tents sleep four under a canvas roof and there’s airconditioning, a kitchen, queen bed, double bunk, bathroom, living area with smart TV, private alfresco dining area and a barbecue.
Luxury tents have been designed for couples and have a bath, large shower and double sinks.
Camping and caravan sites are also available. The resort has a waterpark, jumping pillow, cinema, playground, playroom, swimming pool, tennis court and free Wi-Fi.
Big 4 Sandstone Point Holiday Resort company director Rob Comiskey says they have had an overwhelming response with people travelling from interstate and far north Queensland to check it out.
“People are coming in and saying, ‘wow’,” Rob says. “It’s the combination of what we did. We tried to make it look and feel like a five-star resort but keeping that family market in mind.”
With so many facilities to keep children entertained, parents can also relax and enjoy themselves.
Rob laughs when asked if he’s essentially built a massive playground for his own young children.
“I kept them in mind when building it but didn’t build it for them,” he says.
Rob’s brother, David, also has a young family and they tried to consider what they enjoyed doing when on holiday.
The pool, waterplay park and jumping pillow are a hit right now and as they grow, he expects they’ll enjoy other facilities.
The resort has five barbecue areas and a fire pit, and the waterfront location means guests can go kayaking, jet skiing or access the boat ramp at the marina. And it’s just a stone’s throw from Bribie Island’s beaches, national parks and 4WD tracks.

2. Turkey’s Nest Rainforest Cottages
Treat yourself to a digital detox and rediscover the wonder of nature at this retreat, which is surrounded by the D’Aguilar National Park at Mt Glorious. Rose and Russell Cuthbertson bought the original cottage 15 years ago, and have since built a second cottage, as well as their home, which has a bed and breakfast suite.
“It’s a chill out place for people who say, ‘my life is busy and I need some time out and a getaway’,” Rose says.
“We’re close to the city but a world away.”
At this time of the year, and at an altitude of 650m, it’s a great option to escape the heat.
There are no TVs in the cottages and phone reception is poor — something Rose says her guests love.
“People say they like the digital detox. We try to make it as homely as possible by adding extra touches — fresh flowers, fudge, port, bird seed to feed the birds,” she says.
Each cottage has cooking facilities.

Pack the golf clubs and head to Bribie Island for a getaway with a sporting twist. This retreat, which opened in 2000, is ideally positioned to make the most of its seaside location and proximity to quality golf courses.
“It is 500m from the beach, next to the golf course. We do a lot of play and stay golf packages,” manager Mike Thomson says.
There are 24 self-contained apartments in the holiday letting pool, with one, two, three and four bedrooms. Facilities include a heated swimming pool, putt putt, and rooftop terrace and barbecue area with amazing water views.
And for the golfer, the resort is right on Bribie Island Golf Course and not far from Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club — both are on Golf Australia’s list of the top 100 public access courses in Australia.

Warm hospitality, luxurious accommodation, stunning views and llamas — what’s not to love about this place?
There are five private, self-contained cottages with balconies overlooking the beautiful Dayboro Valley, and a three-bedroom farmhouse for larger groups.
It’s not just the view that attracts visitors — there’s also the llamas. You can join in a llama walk from on Sunday mornings for about one hour. Lead a shared llama along a walking track. Cost is $55 adults, $27.50 for children under 12 years of age. For younger children, or adults not up to a walk, there’s 30-minute llama experiences for $15.
