THIS year marks the sixth anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s death, but his spirit still burns bright.
The Soweto Gospel Choir is bringing his message of courage and hope to the Moreton Bay Region in August, celebrating the life and achievements of South Africa’s first democratically-elected black leader in their new show Freedom.
It portrays the struggles of South Africa’s democratic movement and has inspired audiences around the world through the storytelling power of African gospel.
The Grammy Award-winning choir has come a long way since its humble beginnings rehearsing in a garage in Nelson Mandela’s hometown of Soweto on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Now, the choir tours the world and performs for heads of government and royalty, sharing a stage with legends like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder — to name a few.
Music runs through the veins and vocal chords of choir general manager and bass singer Mulalo Mulovhedzi, whose father David founded the choir nearly 20 years ago.
“Culturally we use song, music and dance to express our joy and sorrow along life’s road,” Mulalo explains.
“It is good for the world to know history, as hopefully with a full understanding we will not make the same mistakes again.”
Redcliffe Entertainment Centre is one of 48 Australian venues included in this year’s Freedom tour.
“I have been to Australia many times before … I adore the beach,” Mulalo said, adding it was a special experience for choir members as Soweto was about 500km from the ocean.
Don’t miss your chance to see the choir at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on August 6 from 7pm.
