Sky’s the limit for football star Izaack Powell

The Brisbane Roar’s youngest ever signing’s football journey started right here in our region and for Izaack Powell, no dream is too big.

FOR Izaack Powell, no dream is too big — playing for Brisbane Roar, Australia or even Manchester United one day.

The Year 12 Grace Lutheran College student has already scored one of his goals, becoming the youngest Brisbane Roar signing in the club’s history this year, and is working hard to make the Australian under-17 side to play in the World Cup in October.

He’s already been selected for the Young Joeys squad, which is touring England this month, and hopes to make the cut for the team that will play in the World Cup.

Added to that is the pressure of Year 12 and achieving the OP he needs to be accepted into a biomedical science course at Queensland University of Technology next year.

“I’d say the most important thing is just being prepared, just making sure I’m as organised as possible, knowing my commitments and planning my school work around it,” he says.

Izaack’s dream is to be a professional footballer, but the grounded 17-year-old knows he needs a Plan B.

His love of the game was encouraged by his father and began as a four or five-year-old at Peninsula Power, but he also dabbled in athletics and enjoyed the sprints.

“I think I was straight into it (football). At an early age, I was playing in the midfield or upfront on the wing scoring goals, but as time went on, I went to the back like a lot of players do finding my position. I ended up at left-back,” Izaack says.

He concedes he’s a naturally competitive person, but loves playing the game with his mates above all else.

“Just going out there looking to win every game and doing it along with your mates is just the best feeling,” he says.

These days, his teammates are some of the guys he looked up to as a young player and watched in awe at Suncorp Stadium, and his coach is Robbie Fowler.

“It’s pretty crazy Robbie being a Liverpool legend, one of the greatest players in the premier league and having him at our training it’s pretty amazing. Learning from him, him giving us all plenty of advice. I can’t wait for the season,” Izaack says.

He takes great pride in wearing the orange Brisbane Roar jersey and credits his playing days at Peninsula Power, Albany Creek Excelsior, the Moreton Bay Jets, the QAS and the Brisbane Roar academy for helping him take the step.

“I went into the first (Brisbane Roar) team training on the Thursday/Friday of the week I played against Sydney FC and I had a bit of an idea of what could be happening, but really I never would have thought that I would be playing at Suncorp in front of all the fans, playing where I had been watching my whole life,” Izaack recalls.

“Then to be signed about a month or two after that was pretty cool, as well being able to give me the platform to keep doing so for the next year and keep training and playing hard. I’m really looking forward to what’s to come.”

The moment he ran on to the pitch in the Roar’s game against Sydney FC, in front of family and friends, will forever be etched in his memory even if it’s a bit of a blur.

While it’s something to hold on to, Izaack knows he has much to do to keep his place in the squad and take his game to the next level.

“I have to keep training hard, doing as much as I can, and every time I step onto the pitch making sure everything counts,” he says.
