WHEN asked if she would host a foodie event as part of the Caboolture Festival, Gather and Feast’s Candice Kiss jumped at the chance.

“I’ve always wanted to do something that involved local producers, creating dishes that introduce them to the community,” she explains.

“It’s our chance to do something different and creative and run with it.”

And that she has, creating a four-course vegetarian menu, for the Garden to Plate Dinner, to dazzle your tastebuds and show how good vegetarian food can be.

Candice is most looking forward to making risotto for the dinner, which will cater for about 50 people.

“I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I’m Italian, so if I stuff this up I’m in trouble,” she says laughing.

“I take a lot of pride in it. I do it the proper way with no cheating.”

Candice says she’s thrilled to be doing her bit to shine the spotlight on local growers, who are hardworking people trying to make a living.

“We deal with a lot of them one-on-one. I get to know them and realise they’re just like me, a one or two-person family businesses,” she says. “It’s nice to get the word out to everyone.”

About 40 per cent of the ingredients Candice uses in her Caboolture cafe every week comes from local growers — salad greens, herbs, edible flowers, tomatoes, bread, fruit, honey and even ice-cream.

The Garden to Plate dinner is on August 9 at Gather and Feast Cafe, 7 James St, Caboolture, from 6.30pm. Tickets are $69. BYO beer and wine. Jazz musician Greg Josephson will be performing.

CABOOLTURE FESTIVAL

Kicking off on August 3, the new Caboolture Festival will host 10 events across two big weeks.

The festival combines well-known events with exciting new ones, bringing live music, entertainment, family fun, foodie delights and something for all ages to the region.

Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) chairman Shane Newcombe says it will be two weeks of non-stop family fun. “There is something in the festival that will appeal to everyone, from the little ones looking to enjoy an amusement ride to the whole family enjoying a free concert,” he says.

Acting mayor Mike Charlton says the event is testament to the continued growth of the Caboolture area.

“It offers more than just family-friendly entertainment, it also provides a vital economic boost for the area,” he says.
