Countless audiences have danced in the aisles, and laughed and cried in their seats since the musical Mamma Mia! first hit the stage more than 20 years ago.
Now, you’ll have the chance to do the same when the show comes to Redcliffe in March.
Redcliffe Musical Theatre is staging the production, which was created to showcase the music of Swedish supergroup ABBA and tell the heartwarming story of a single mother and her daughter, who’s about to be married.
Redcliffe Musical Theatre president Madeleine Johns will be directing the musical, which opens on March 13.
“I think ABBA has a very special place in the hearts of Australians. You can go to any wedding and party and put ABBA on and everyone gets up to dance,” Madeleine says.
“Everyone loves it, from five to 95. Taking the opportunity to do the show here was a no-brainer.”
It tells the story of Donna, who had relationships with three men before she learned she was pregnant.
When her daughter, Sophie, decides to get married, she writes to each of the men inviting them to the event and sends her mother into a spin when they arrive.
Madeleine says the whole show mirrors a big family wedding celebration, with all the associated events, and heightened tensions and emotions.
The tight bond between Donna and Sophie is at the heart of the production – a fact not lost on Meg Kiddle and Georgia Burnett, who will embrace the lead roles.
Meg says audiences love Donna because she’s real, sensible and vulnerable.
“Everyone can see some of themselves in her and can identify with her,” she explains.
“Donna and I are fairly similar in personality. There’s a sensible and then there’s a dreamer side to her.”
Georgia says the character of Sophie is passionate and knows what she wants, or at least she thinks she does until she reaches the point when she’s questioning everything.
“I understand what it’s like to reach that point, so I can relate to Sophie,” Georgia says.
She likens Mamma Mia! to a fairytale or a love story depicting Donna and Sophie’s love, Sophie and Sky’s love and Donna’s love of three men.
“I think Donna and Sophie’s relationship is a rocky one at times because they’ve only had each other for so long, but that’s what makes their relationship so strong,” Georgia says. Meg agrees, and says she’ll be fighting back tears when they sing Slipping Through My Fingers, a touching moment of reflection as both lead characters realise their lives are about to change.
“Audiences can expect to feel like they’ve been embraced by Donna and Sophie in the story and they’ve been transported to a Greek Island where they can step back into an era when it was all about ABBA music and they’re just having fun,” Madeleine says.
