RUGBY league fans will be treated to the biggest grand final day in a decade, with five games across junior, youth and senior levels to be staged at Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium on September 29.
Queensland Rugby League chief operating officer Rohan Sawyer says he can’t wait to watch every pass, tackle and try, and will be in the stands all day.
“It’s the first time we’ve been able to have such a full card. It’s probably the biggest grand final day we’ve had at least in the last decade,” Rohan says.
“There’ll be five games on one day in one setting, including an international.”
The Intrust Super Cup Grand Final is shifting from Suncorp Stadium to Dolphin Stadium for the next three years in a move Rohan says will create a spine-tingling atmosphere for players and fans.
“As a player, getting to a grand final is hard enough and exciting enough … this will create an atmosphere that most players that get to that level dream of,” he says.
“The fans will be in touching distance of where they are. The fans will be amongst the action like never before.”
He says Dolphin Stadium is a first-class facility, designed to offer the best playing and viewing experience.
It can also seat about 8000 people, the average size of a grand final day crowd. He’s tipping a full house and awesome atmosphere.
“We’ve been lucky to have Suncorp as a grand final venue but we now have an opportunity to create a bespoke, unique event for our players and fans that shows how strong rugby league is in Queensland,” Rohan says.
He says fans can expect high-quality footy across the day, including the Australian Schoolboys and Junior Kiwis, which will be an international game featuring players aspiring to one day play in the NRL.
The same can be said for the Hastings Deering Colts competition and Intrust Super Cup Grand Final.
He says to see players who have played NRL, or are on the verge of being tomorrow’s superstars, will be pretty special.
“I’m looking forward to all five games. I’ll be there all day,” he says.
Dolphin Stadium’s adjoining fields will be put to good use, with a family fun zone out the back, so families can make a day of it.
There will be activities, face painting, food trucks and more from 9am.
As for which two sides will be battling it out for the Intrust Super Cup trophy, Rohan says the competition is wide open and any one of the teams in the finals has the talent to take out the title.
“Their season essentially starts now. They all have a ticket to the raffle and it’s up to them if they can take out the big prize,” he says.
Unfortunately, the Redcliffe Dolphins have been knocked out of the finals following their 20-16 loss to Wynnum Manly on September 15.
Tickets are selling fast to grand final day and Rohan recommends fans secure their seats early to avoid disappointment.
“With the quality of talent on display and with so much on the line in each game, we expect tickets to sell fast and the full-house sign to go up,” he says.
“To have a venue with great facilities and sold out creates the best grand final atmosphere that you can have.”
