ENGLISH-style fish and chips, complete with mushy peas, has won over Redcliffe locals and diners further afield.

Yabbey Road was named Brisbane’s best following an online poll conducted by The Courier-Mail and U on Sunday earlier this month.

Owners Alan and Kathy Bray opened their Beatles-inspired shop about four years ago. It has a yellow submarine behind the front counter, memorabilia, a life-size cutout of John Lennon, music of the era playing and an Abbey Road-style crossing out the front.

While the decor certainly grabs attention, it’s the food that keeps people coming back.

They make all their own sauces, mushy peas, beetroot chutney for their burgers, their own batter, and crumb the seafood themselves.

“The one thing about our shop, and what we’ve done right from the beginning, is we make everything ourselves,” Kathy says.

“If you want the flavour, you have to come here, you can’t get it somewhere else. That is what really works for us. People say they love our sauces and our batter.

“We try to make everything possible gluten-free so everyone can share the (fish and chips) experience.”

And it seems their call for people to “give peas a chance” has been answered. They’re a hit. “We’ve converted a lot of people to the peas because it’s an English thing. Now, they come in for the peas,” Alan says with pride.

There’s plenty more people coming in since news broke of their No. 1 ranking. A steady stream of customers was queued down the road for five hours that first weekend.

The couple heard the shop had been nominated, and made the top 10, but were blown away to learn they had won.

“We nearly died. There’s so many good fish and chips shops out there,” Alan says.

“We wouldn’t have been more surprised if we won the Lotto. It was totally unexpected,” Kathy says.
