A husband and wife team are busily working to open two Silly Solly’s discount stores north of Brisbane in time for the festive season.
Jason and Megan Toohey opened their first Silly Solly’s retail outlet at Harvey Bay 12 months ago.
Prior to that they had operated five Caltex service stations from Caboolture to Gympie.
Now they plan to open one at Deception Bay and Brendale within weeks of each other.
The Deception Bay store will be at 657 Deception Bay Rd, the Brendale outlet at 170 Kremzow Rd in a new complex currently under construction.
Silly Solly’s are known for selling nothing over $5.
Customers can find anything from grocery items, cleaning products, hardware, craft and fashion items in store.
The retailer currently has 20 stores in Queensland and aims to have 34 stores down the eastern seaboard by the end of the year.
Mr Toohey grew up at Bray Park, played for Pine Rivers Cricket Club and always wanted to open a business in his home town.
“We had been looking for an available space for a while, this one become available and we thought let’s do it,” Mr Toohey said.
There is currently just one other Silly Solly’s in the Moreton Bay Region, at Morayfield.
Mr Toohey said the range changed often and what was available one day might not be available the next.
“We are a bricks and mortar retailer, you can’t order online,” he said.
“Customers are often surprised that there is nothing over $5 and at the range we carry.”
Mr Toohey said they would employ 20 people at the Deception Bay store and another 15 at Brendale.
“We have had a fantastic response to our job advertising with more than 400 resumes sent in,” he said.
A few finishing touches have to be done and 150 pallets of stock moved in before Mr Toohey can open the doors at Deception Bay - but he hopes to be up and running by mid-October.
Brendale will follow shortly after.
Mr Toohey said both stores would have their full Christmas lines in at opening.
